Marc Jacobs Goes Kabuki
September 15th 2009 10:59
While I was browsing the Marc Jacobs Spring 2010 Ready-To-Wear Collection I had the oddest feeling I had seen this look somewhere before. But where? And then it hit me! Japan! His muse must have been the distinctive look of Japanese Kabuki. There is nothing else on earth quite like it. So, if Mr. Jacobs thinks he is fooling us then, he better think again. I have been to Japan and I know the look well, simply by slapping some white face powder on his models, drawing their facial features into small grotesque minitures of the real ones, pulling the into a tight ball off the face, then dressing them in ill-fitting elabrite costume, then voile! Marc Jacobs has created his own runway kabuki. The look is not meant to be pretty in Japan and I know it's not pretty on the runway. Let's hope he vacays next year in a place where the theater can inspire better......maybe Paris!
